Governor Pete Ricketts Expected to Sign the Bill

WASHINGTON—During Thursday’s legislative session, Nebraska passed a bill that bans the dismemberment of living unborn babies by a vote of 33-8. The legislation was sponsored by state Senator Suzanne Geist.

“We are grateful to Nebraska state Senator Suzanne Geist who bravely fought to protect living unborn children from the cruelty of dismemberment abortions in the state of Nebraska,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life (NRLC). “We praise the hard work of our Nebraska affiliate, Nebraska Right to Life, and their executive director, Julie Schmit-Albin, who worked tirelessly to make this victory possible.”

Pro-abortion legal maneuvering blocked the bill until senators finally voted to pull Legislative Bill 814 out of the Judiciary Committee in July. However, pro-abortion members of the legislature filibustered preventing a final vote. On August 5th, after three hours of debate, supporters of the bill finally had the 34 votes needed to end the filibuster.

The legislation was a top legislative priority for Nebraska Right to Life, NRLC’s state affiliate.

The bill bans dismembering living unborn babies. An abortionist purposely tears apart a living unborn child and extracts her one piece at a time using clamps, scissors, or a similar instrument.

“This legislation protects unborn children from the brutality of being torn apart limb by limb, and we look forward to Governor Pete Ricketts signing it,” said Tobias.

When the governor signs the bill, Nebraska will join 12 other states with bans on dismemberment abortions. These states include Kansas, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Kentucky, Ohio, North Dakota, and Indiana.

Founded in 1968, the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the federation of 50 state right-to-life affiliates and more than 3,000 local chapters, is the nation’s oldest and largest grassroots pro-life organization. Recognized as the flagship of the pro-life movement, NRLC works through legislation and education to protect innocent human life from abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide and euthanasia.
