Eminent Pro-Life Attorney to Testify Before House Judiciary Committee on Planned Parenthood’s Harvesting and Trafficking of Baby Body Parts

WASHINGTON – National Right to Life General Counsel James Bopp Jr., Esq., will testify before the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary tomorrow in a hearing titled “Planned Parenthood Exposed: Examining the Horrific Abortion Practices at the Nation’s Largest Abortion Provider.” The hearing comes on the heels of a series of videos by The Center for Medical Progress (CMP) exposing the gruesome business of baby-body-part harvesting and trafficking, often involving affiliates of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), the nation’s largest abortion provider.

“Current practices employed by Planned Parenthood and various tissue procurement companies not only violate federal law when applicable, but also many ethical and moral principles,” said Bopp.

Bopp will testify, “Comments made by employees of Planned Parenthood and tissue procurement employees raise credible concerns that infants are born alive after an induced abortion at Planned Parenthood . . . While it is not clear from the videos whether or not Planned Parenthood kills babies born alive after an induced abortion to harvest fetal tissue, this is an area that needs further investigation.”

Bopp will also testify that the videos provide evidence that Planned Parenthood has collected payments based on “the market value per-specimen,” in excess of actual costs, and has altered abortion techniques in order to facilitate the harvesting of organs despite having given women seeking abortions written assurances that this will not occur.

“Planned Parenthood now commands more than one-third of the total abortion ‘market‘,” said Carol Tobias, National Right to Life president. “We fully support investigations into many aspects of this grisly business.  Planned Parenthood equals abortion.”

“Not only is Planned Parenthood jeopardizing their patient’s health, it is also violating a commitment made to them,” Bopp said. “Is Planned Parenthood really protecting women or are they trying to protect their bottom line by ensuring they can get the most money they can out of each abortion?”

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest provider of abortions – at least one-third of all abortions in the U.S. are performed at Planned Parenthood-affiliated facilities.  According to their most recent annual report, Planned Parenthood received at least $528 million annually from the federal government or other levels of government.

Based on data from their own annual report from 2013-2014, nearly one in eight women walking through the door of a Planned Parenthood clinic has an abortion. A background memo from National Right to Life is available here:
