Today National Right to Life President and Pro-Life Perspective host Carol Tobias talks thoughtfully about media bias and its impact on the Right to Life Movement as part of her week-long series on “Dealing with Media Inaccuracies.” Today’s program, as are all five this week, can be heard at

Mrs. Tobias offers a laundry list of helpful suggestions, but none more important than #1. Of course there will be many times the pro-life side is not represented—or misrepresented. But “complaining won’t help.”

Instead, she advises working with your local media. And if making that personal contact proves difficult, producing a steady stream of accurate, informative letters to the editor can establish your credentials. In some cases, Mrs. Tobias explains, that can result in a request or an opposing “op-ed.”

When it comes to explaining inaccuracies, if it is not the reflection of an overt pro-abortion bias, what is it? The reporter may know virtually nothing about abortion or pro-lifers. One example is that a reporter will write about what they see as a newly discussed opposition to euthanasia among “anti-abortionists” when the truth is the Movement has opposed euthanasia from its very earliest days.

Other errors creep in because the reporter may be taking his/her cues from old stories that unfairly focus on extremists who claim to be “pro-life.” Mrs. Tobias also talks about “newsroom mishaps” where a copy editor makes change in the story after the reporter has filed their account.
