This Week on Pro-Life Perspective: Dealing With Media Inaccuracies, Part Two

Today Mrs. Tobias helps the listener understand the advantages and disadvantages of a media landscape that is dotted with thousands and thousands of outlets–everything from a major television network or newspaper to individual blogs and everything in between. In times past when a handful of networks and newspapers dominated the information flow, if they cut out the right to life perspective—or misstated it—there were limited ways to redress the problem.

But with an avalanche of outlets, even if many ignore us, there are still plenty of opportunities to get our information out. The flipside is with a more fractured listening/reading audience, it’s difficult to reach a large percentage.

Mrs. Tobias then turns to how National Right to Life’s Communications Department works with media, mostly national, but by no means

exclusively. Key to understanding how to be an effective participant is to recognize that the slant taken by the outlet that breaks the story often shapes the way the story is presented from that time forward.

As Mrs. Tobias points out, it is difficult but not impossible to break into the story in the “middle.” If National Right to Life’s “take” on an issue has not been included, that’s where having established working relationships with reporters and editors comes in. Not only will they honor the commitment to be fair by talking to NRLC, it will make their story different and better.
