Even the Most Partisan Democrats Rethinking Obama

Joe Scarborough and Chris Matthews

When you’re pro-abortion President Barack Obama and you seem to be losing no less rabid a partisan than Chris Matthews, it may be time to seriously rethink the battle plan. On the same morning The Hill newspaper reported on mounting tension between Obama and Senate Democrats, Matthews (who once famously said that upon hearing Obama give a speech, “I felt this thrill going up my leg”) was decidedly downbeat today on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” show.

Matthews agreed with host Joe Scarborough that there are “parallels” between what Obama is experiencing right now and what President Carter (whom Matthews worked for a speechwriter) was going through in 1979.

Host of MSNBC’s “Hardball,” Matthews discussed three things that are going on right now as people begin to make decisions about next year–“Conditions–which work against the president; values –which go both ways; and tone, which I think also works against the president.” As have many Democrats, Matthews criticized Obama for not being “ticked off,” as if hammering the lectern and raising his voice a couple of octaves will sweep people off their feet.

But if the President fails that test, Senate Democrats would get straight “As,” according to the Hill. Words like “furious” and “frustrated” and “flare ups” and feeling “abandoned” crop up throughout the story, written by Alexander Bolton.

“With Obama’s approval ratings at record lows and the 2012 electoral map favoring Senate Republicans, the president and Senate Democrats are, in many ways, on divergent paths. Vulnerable Democrats from red states see Obama as impeding their chances of winning reelection, while the president often seems aloof to their concerns.”

Meanwhile, Obama, according to Bolton, “focused on winning a second term, has distanced himself from Congress altogether…”
