Less than Two Days Away from House Vote on Protect Life Act; be sure to Contact your Member of the House of Representatives

What the National Right to Life-backed “Protect Life Act” would do is as simple as it is important: remove the abortion-expanding components of ObamaCare. (Link to Part One to find out how to contact your Member of the House of Representatives.)

So much has happened that we might forget that until pro-abortion Democratic senators and President Obama worked their will last year, the principles of the Hyde Amendment were to be applied to Obama’s gargantuan health care “reform” bill.

Instead when the dust settled the so-called “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” contained “multiple provisions that provide authorizations for subsidies for abortion, both implicit and explicit, and also multiple provisions that opened doors to abortion-expanding administrative actions,” as NRLC explained in a letter. It is those flaws that the Protect Life Act will correct.

Sponsored by Congressman Joe Pitts (R-Pa.), the Act is similar to the “Stupak-Pitts Amendment.”  That initially passed the House in 2009, but it was kept out of the final health care law due to determined opposition from pro-abortion Democratic senators, led by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and President Obama.

ObamaCare limped over the line, courtesy of a bogus executive order signed by President Obama that was used by a handful of House Democrats to justify voting for the pro-abortion Senate-passed bill. Since that time the president’s insincerity has been on display.

As National Right to Life Legislative Director Douglas Johnson said just last week,  “The Administration’s 2010 pretense that ObamaCare did not expand abortion grows more tattered with each passing month. While running for mayor of Chicago, former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel boasted of his role in devising a strategy for ‘the Stupak Amendment not to exist by law.’”

Almost as if on cue, last Wednesday Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius gave a call-to-arms speech at a NARAL Pro-Choice America fundraiser in Chicago, in which she said ‘we are in a war’ with critics of the law.” (See

If you go to, you can both read Mr. Johnson’s full statement and watch him testify about the law before a House subcommittee in February 2011.

Time is running short. Be sure to contact your member of the House.
