New Video Tells the Truth about the Abortion Pill

Oct 27, 2011

By Randall K. O’Bannon, Ph.D. , NRL-ETF Director of Education & Research

Can you imagine what a counseling session would be like if the doctor really told women the truth about the abortion pill?   A YouTube video by a group called WeAreFactNotOpinion creates that unusual scenario, giving would-be customers of the abortifacient much to think about. [The doctor, of course, is an abortionist. But in keeping with the restrained tone, he is never identified as such so as I go through video I will describe him as the “doctor.”]

In the video, a young woman visits a clinic and tells the doctor she has come in to get the abortion pill. He confirms a positive pregnancy test and tells her he believes that conception occurred three weeks earlier. Then he tells her that there are a few things he needs to go over.

The doctor tells the young woman they need to confirm that the embryo is attached to the uterus rather than a fallopian tube, that is, an ectopic pregnancy, which could prove life-threatening. He tells her this can be determined with an ultrasound.

Defending her decision, the young woman tells the doctor “It’s just not the right time.  I can’t possibly  have a baby right now.  After all, it’s just a clump of cells, right?”

The doctor, showing more candor than one would ever expect to find in any real abortion clinic, says that while true, in one way, that all human beings begin as “organizations of tissues…cells” he informs her that “you and I are ‘clumps of cells’ if you think about it that way.”

He then tells the young lady that the embryo is attached to the uterus drawing nutrients and developing at an “incredibly rapid pace,” and that the child’s heart is beating.

This startles the young lady, who says “excuse me – it’s what!?”  The doctor tells her that the unborn child has a beating heart which starts about 21 days after fertilization (essentially, about the day she comes in to the clinic), pulsing with its own blood.

The doctor then goes on to tell her about the abortion pill, actually informing her that the procedure involves not one, but two medications.

The first, mifepristone, the doctor says, will deprive the embryo of the nutrients needed from mother, so that the child dies.

Though the uterus may initiate contractions to pass the dead embryo, the doctor tells her that the second drug (misoprostol) will trigger more severe contractions to rid the body of the child and placenta.

When he tells her that she needs to be prepared for the pain of those contractions, she looks somewhat alarmed.  He informs her that with this method, she will have to take care of the abortion herself and warns her that the abortion can take several hours or several weeks.

Still focused on what the doctor said earlier, she asks the doctor “Will it, will it hurt?”  Showing more honesty than one would expect in most, if not all, clinics, he tells her, “Likely it will.”

He tells her that the pain while waiting for it to happen may be hard and that cleaning up afterwards may be harder.  He says that “participating in your own abortion may be the hardest part of all.”

Obviously hoping to avoid the more difficult psychological aspects of the chemical abortion, the young woman asks, “So I won’t really know when it happens?

The doctor tells her that there will be cramping and bleeding as the dead embryo passes and another visit to confirm the abortion, but asks her if she is prepared for what she will see and experience.

Her answer, probably true of many who are sold chemical abortions every day in America, is “I hadn’t thought about that.”

The doctor tells her that RU486 works about 91% of the time, but that surgery is required to control bleeding or to complete the abortion for 8% [the literature contains several figures based on dosage, timing, method of administration and varies from study to study, but these are in the ballpark].

He informs the young woman that in some cases when the bleeding continues she will need immediate medical help.

He tells her to let him know what she decides and leaves the room.

Leaving in her car, she looks in her rearview mirrow and sees a young mother loading a toddler in a car.  The young lady starts her car and the screen fades to black before a screen comes on with 24/7 phone numbers to call for those who have had or are considering abortion.

The quality is first-rate and the message is clear.  Despite what women have been told about the safety and simplicity of the abortion pill, the reality is anything but.

And if more women were told the truth, more of them would leave the clinics, pass on the abortion pill, and consider opening their arms to the miracle inside them.
