Proof that “Elections Matter”

Pro-Life Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell

Off-year elections are very important, both for what happens and for what interpretation the media places on the results.

Since the Commonwealth of Virginia has state elections on the odd-numbered years, the state has elections every year. (Federal elections are held on even-numbered years.)

NARAL knows that Republicans control the House of Delegates. If they can “flip” a few Senate seats from Democrat to Republican, the GOP will control both houses of the legislature and the governor’s office, held by pro-lifer Bob McDonnell.

NARAL sent out a fund-raiser asking for money and volunteers.

“This year, we’ve seen a full-scale legislative assault on women’s rights and health – at the federal level, in states across the country, and right here in Virginia. Anti-choice politicians are scrambling to capitalize on their recent electoral gains and passing unprecedented, egregious new laws that restrict our rights and increase government interference in women’s private, personal medical decisions.“

We see it differently, of course. We see 2011 as an important example of what pro-lifers can do, especially when (as they customarily do) they consult with National Right to Life’s Department of State Legislation.

But we do agree on one thing with “NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia.” What happened this year is “proof positive that elections matter. “
