The Phony War and the Real War Against Women

Townada and Darnell Wimms hold the funeral photo of her daughter Niasha Delain and her baby in the casket.

I’d like to combine two items, a fine piece that ran on National Review Online  today written by Kathryn Jean Lopez, its editor-at-large, and a few additional thoughts about the horrible story that we ran Friday about a man who murdered his girl friend the day she was about to give birth to their child, a child he stabbed repeatedly. I think they are mutually illuminating.

Lopez was inspired—or enraged–by a PPFA email fundraiser, sent out under the three-word subject line: “Every. Single. Day.” Lopez writes

“I understand that Planned Parenthood is in the business of self-preservation. But surely we can do better than insisting that questioning — and investigating — this taxpayer-funded mammoth, which relies on abortion as a business model, amounts to a ‘war on women’? Unfortunately, this is the quality of our debate over Planned Parenthood’s public-funding future.

“It currently receives a million dollars a day in state and federal funding. Surely, credible questions about fraud and abuse and failure to protect women and girls from sexual abuse and sex trafficking are legitimate ones? Also legitimate is demanding transparency about just what Planned Parenthood is: an organization born out of a eugenics vision, which continues today to support and even proselytize for a radical idea of just what the human person is and what our relationships with one another are about.”

I could not help but think of Niasha Delain, who was murdered the very day she was to have given birth to the child she had named Aidan.

A bank teller, Delain was stabbed 20 to 30 times in her stomach and torso in 2008, according to the Queens district attorney’s. Aidan was stabbed five times.

The connection? The link that ties the deaths of so many women—and their unborn babies: “Cops previously said Derrick Redd, 38, of Jamaica admitted that he ‘hadn’t believed the child was his and urged Niasha Delain, 25, to have an abortion,’” according to the New York Daily News.

In the abortion-drenched culture in which we live, the message sent to the Derrick Reeds of this world is not only should the Niasha Delains get an abortion, if they don’t, mind you, both they and their babies will have only themselves to blame if they pay the ultimate price.

Yes, there IS a “war against women,” but it isn’t one conducted by pro-lifers in and out of Congress. It’s commanded by generals such as PPFA, ably assisted by its lieutenants, led by NARAL, and the objective is as wide as it is unyielding: the eradication of each and every unborn baby who is unwanted, unplanned, or inconvenient.

Talk about a Permanent War.
