Woman Dies in “Controversial” Abortion Clinic; Fourth Investigation in Six Years Ensues

A controversial Australian abortion clinic, already under fire by local authorities, is being investigated for the fourth time in six years after a 42-year-old woman died following an abortion last week, The Age reported.  A spokeswoman for the Coroners Court of Victoria said Tuesday that the ”unexpected” death of the woman would be investigated.

Paul Millar and Nino Bucci reported that the woman died at Box Hill Hospital after having had a “procedure” at a private Croydon clinic– the Maroondah surgery of Marie Stopes International Australia, formally known as Croydon Day Surgery.

The Age reports that anesthetist James Latham Peters, 62,  is alleged to have infected more than 50 women with hepatitis C in 2008 and 2009. Out on $200,000 surety (bail), Peters “will return to court in May for the remainder of the committal hearing.”

In 2009, Dr. Mark Schulberg, the owner was found guilty of unprofessional conduct. He had failed “to gain legal consent to perform a late-term abortion on an intellectually disabled woman,” according to Millar and Bucci. The woman was 25 weeks pregnant.

This past August, 40-year-old Pheap Sem “was left fighting for her life in the Box Hill Hospital after Dr Schulberg performed a late-term abortion surgery on her,” according to The Age. Schulberg is being investigated by the practitioners’ board. He’s also been found guilty of inappropriately prescribing painkillers.

Last week’s death was confirmed Tuesday by Marie Stopes International chief executive Maria Deveson Crabbe.

Less encouraging is that a department spokesman for the Health Department said that after being made aware of the death, officers visited the abortion clinic, adding ”There was no indication from the visit that it was operating outside its requirements.”

The newspaper was unable to get a comment from Schulberg, who was  unavailable because he “was on holiday.”
