Days After Investigation Shows Illegal Sex-Selective Abortions, executive in charge of overseeing abortion clinics resigns

Feb 24, 2012

By Dave Andrusko

Cynthia Bower resigned as head of Care Quality Commission

Over at “Undercover investigation shows women are being granted illegal sex-selection abortions in Britain,” Dr. Peter Saunders writes about the incredible results of an undercover investigation by The Daily Telegraph which found that abortion clinics were willing to abortion the basis of the baby’s sex without a second thought. “Clinicians admitted they were prepared to falsify paperwork to arrange the abortions even though it is illegal to conduct such ‘sex-selection’ procedures,” Saunders wrote.

The women accompanying Telegraph reporters to consultations “were from a variety of ethnic backgrounds,” Saunders wrote. “At each appointment, the pregnant woman explained that she had taken a blood test abroad or had a scan to determine the sex of the baby and wanted a termination because of the gender. Staff at several clinics agreed to arrange abortions for women who said they did not want to continue with their pregnancies because of the sex of their babies.”

The Telegraph further reported today that Cynthia Bower, the chief executive of the Care Quality Commission, “resigned after a report criticised the [commission] which is responsible for regulating abortion clinics, hospitals and care homes.”

As we’re discussed in prior stories, the CQC was “blamed for a series of regulatory failings, including a lack of oversight at Stafford Hospital, which led to the deaths of dozens of patients, and a major scandal at a care home in Bristol.”

According to the Telegraph, “

“The CQC has faced criticism virtually from the start. Seven months into its existence, Baroness Young, its chairman, resigned after Basildon Hospital in Essex was exposed for having filthy wards and a high death rate despite being rated as “good” by the regulator just a month previously.”

While it’s difficult to directly link Bower’s resignation to what the Telegraph reported, it seems quite a coincidence that she should resign her $300,000+post immediately after the results of the undercover Telegraph investigation.
