Abortionists in England breaking the law by “pre-signing” abortion consent forms

British abortion “laws” are about as lax as you could imagine. But the law does state that unless there is an emergencey, “two doctors must agree for a woman to have an abortion,” according to the Guardian newspaper.

But a spot check last week of more than 250 abortion clinics found that blank consent forms are being pre-signed in anticipation of women coming in to abort, the Guardian reports. Estimates are that 15% to 20% of the abortion clinics may be breaking the law.

Which is really outrageous, because abortionists don’t even have to see the woman in person. “Nurses, counsellors and other healthcare professionals can assess the woman before the forms are signed,” according to the Guardian. All abortionists need do is “certify that they are aware of her circumstances and why she wants to go ahead with the procedure.”

And the violations are not confined to some out-of-the-way abortion clinics. The violators  include clinics run by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, Marie Stopes, the National Health Service, and private firms.

The Guardian reports that the inspections were ordered by the health secretary, Andrew Lansley, and carried out by officials from the Care Quality Commission.

Lansley said he was “shocked and appalled” to learn that some clinics “may be allowing doctors to pre-sign abortion certificates,” adding, “This is contrary to the spirit and the letter of the Abortion Act.”

Those rules, he said, “are there for a reason – to ensure there are safeguards for women before an abortion can be carried out. To protect women the right checks and balances must be in place.”

Not surprisingly, Ann Furedi, the chief executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service said she was “appalled the media had been told about the latest inspections before the clinics.” Furedi said the work of abortionists is already intensely scrutinised, with clinics regularly inspected by the Care Quality Commission.”
