California law introduced to allow non-physicians to perform abortions

Pro-abortion California State Senator Christine Kehoe

Pro-abortion California State Senator Christine Kehoe has introduced legislation to allow non-physicians to perform first-trimester aspiration abortions. Although obliquely described in news accounts, what happens is that a powerful suction tube with a sharp cutting edge is inserted into the womb through the dilated cervix. The suction dismembers the body of the developing baby and tears the placenta from the wall of the uterus, sucking the baby’s remains into a collection bottle.

Under Kehoe’s proposal, which is co-sponsored by the leaders of the Assembly and Senate (both controlled by pro-abortion Democrats), licensed nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and certified nurse-midwives would be allowed to perform these abortions.

“California Senate Bill 1501 would extend the practice of human abortion beyond licensed surgeons,” said Brian Johnston, director of the California Pro-Life Council and western director for National Right to Life. He pointed out the irony that “Veterinary regulations will continue to prohibit practitioners, midwives, or anyone other than a licensed surgeon from aborting the life of any animal, large or small.”

Assemblyman Brian Jones issued a statement in which he said, “My immediate response when I heard about this bill was visceral — I felt like I was kicked in the gut.” Jones added, “I shouldn’t be shocked at the moral failure this represents, but I fear what it says about our society that we are actually looking for more ways to abort babies.”

Pro-abortionists periodically attempt to change state laws to enlarge the pool of abortionists.

The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly stated that the performance of abortions may be restricted to physicians.  In Roe itself, the Court held that “[t]he State may define the term ‘physician.’…to mean only physician currently licensed by the State, and may proscribe any abortion by a person who is not a physician as so defined.”
