Part two today of “places-you-wouldn’t-necessarily-expect-to-see-an affirmation-of-a-pro-life-outreach” is a column in the Philadelphia Inquirer written by Kevin Riordan. Riordan actually took the time to interview Ryan Bomberger, who heads the pro-life Radiance Foundation, AND to go the site of its “Fatherhood begins in the womb” billboard in Camden, New Jersey.
The first sentence indicates that Riordan was moved by the billboard:
“At the bleak intersection of Broadway and Newton Avenue in Camden, a man reverently kisses the bare belly of a beaming, very pregnant woman.”
Bomberger tells Riordan the simple but powerful truth: “Black children are beautiful, and too many are being aborted.”
This pro-life, pro-fatherhood, pro-woman campaign is a collaborative effort between The Radiance Foundation and the Issues4Life Foundation, motivated by the devastating impact of abortion on the Black community. Together they designed the billboard and 400 others nationwide, according to Riordan. Camden is the group’s first site in New Jersey.
Walter B. Hoye II, a pastor, is President of Issues4Life Foundation. To Hoye the billboard campaign focuses on the missing component of the abortion debate: fathers. He said the campaign exposes the culture of abandonment that abortion has created.
Riordan interviewed Jimmie Hollis, 67, who has two grown children and a grandchild, and who supports the billboard’s message. “We want to create awareness of the issue, like they do with breast cancer,” Hollis said. “Fatherlessness and abortion are issues in every community, but they’re prevalent in the black community, and we have to get our arms around this,” said Hollis, who is black.
