Illinois Next in Republican Presidential Sweepstakes

The advantage he enjoys over former Senator Rick Santorum ranges from 4 points (an older Chicago Tribune poll) to 15 points (in the latest poll taken by the Democratic polling firm of PPP over the weekend). Romney’s average lead is 8.5 points.

As of the weekend—with 1,144 delegates needed to win the GOP nomination—Romney has 521 delegates, to 253 for Santorum, 136 for former Speaker Newt Gingrich, and 50 for Rep. Ron Paul, according to the Associated Press. has slightly different delegate count but the same order:  516 to 236 to 141 to 66.

Only Mr. Romney and Mr. Santorum have devoted serious time campaigning for Illinois’ 69 delegates.

Two caveats. First, in the PPP poll 28% said they could still change their minds. Second, Santorum has outperformed polls in Alabama and Mississippi.
