In a four-way Republican primary Tuesday night pro-life candidate Jesse Kelly carried 38% of the vote to win the opportunity to replace pro-abortion Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Az.), who stepped down in January, in a special election.
Kelly will face pro-abortion Democrat Ron Barber, a former aide to Giffords, in a special election June 12 to finish out the remainder of Rep. Gifford’s term which ends in November. Barber ran unopposed, but only because Rep. Gifford endorsed him. The special election is considered a tossup by many political pundits
Mr. Kelly nearly defeated Giffords in 2010, losing by only two percentage points in the state’s 8th congressional district.
This election cycle is highly compressed. Primaries for the November 6 election for a full two-year term will be held in August and both parties could field a number of candidates.
