NRL PAC Endorses Jesse Kelly in Arizona’s Special Election

Pro-life candidate Jesse Kelly (R) is a husband, father, Iraq war veteran and businessman.

The National Right to Life Political Action Committee has endorsed Republican Jesse Kelly for Congress in Arizona’s June 12 special election to replace pro-abortion Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D), who stepped down in January. Kelly lost to Giffords by two percentage points in 2010.

By carrying 38% in a four-way Republican primary April 17, Kelly won the opportunity to face pro-abortion Democrat Ron Barber, a former aide to Giffords, in the special election to be held June 12. The winner will serve the remainder of Giffords’ term.

The race is considered a “tossup” by many political pundits with recent polling showing a narrow gap between Kelly and Barber.  Early voting begins on May 17 and a majority of voters are expected to vote before the June 12 special election.

“This endorsement reflects Jesse Kelly’s commitment to renewing a culture of life, not only in Arizona, but throughout the nation and in Congress,” said David N. O’Steen, Ph.D., National Right to Life Executive Director.

“Jesse Kelly is a strong advocate for life: he supports pro-life legislation and he opposes the use of federal funding for abortion.  We look forward to working with him to restore legal protection for innocent life – unborn children and medically disabled or dependent persons whose lives are threatened by abortion or rationing.”

The contrast could not be more clear. Both Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, and NARAL Pro-Choice America have contributed to Mr. Barber’s campaign.   In the endorsement announcement, NARAL President Nancy Keenan cited her concern over the number of pro-life votes that have taken place in the U.S. House in 2011, “the highest number in more than a decade.”

Keenan added, “In addition to these contributions, our member activists are energized and ready to roll up their sleeves…”

O’Steen noted that in March 2010, Congress voted to enact President Obama’s health care legislation (ObamaCare), which will provide government funding for health plans that pay for abortion on demand, and will lead to the rationing of lifesaving medical treatments. “Jesse Kelly’s support is needed to reverse the pro-abortion and pro-rationing effects of that health care legislation,” O’Steen said.
