Talk about canaries in the coal mine, a new survey of 2,000 18-to 24 year olds finds that less than half—48%–want President Obama to stay in the White House for a second term, compared to 41% who expressed support of a generic Republican presidential candidate and 34% for pro-life Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

The 2012 Millennial Values Survey was conducted jointly by Public Religion Research Institute and Georgetown University’s Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs.

“Both the Romney and Obama campaigns have their work cut out for them to reach college-age Millennial voters,” said Robert P. Jones, CEO of Public Religion Research Institute.  “Obama enjoys significant favorability and excitement advantages over Romney, but his support among younger voters today is substantially lower than among younger voters four years ago.  Romney’s largest challenge is that he inspires considerably less excitement than Obama or other Republican candidates.”

61% said they are currently registered to vote,  but only 46% said they‘re absolutely certain to vote in November.
