A follow up to the video showing a PPFA Employee instructing a woman how to obtain an abortion if the child is female

It was with a combination of ever-so-mild surprise and great dismay that NRL News Today readers responded to our story yesterday about Live Action’s investigative video in which a PPFA employee is “seen instructing a Live Action investigator how to obtain an abortion if the child is a female,” as the Daily Caller described the situation. Thanks to the heroic work of Chen Guangcheng in China and the patient educational efforts of National Right to Life here at home, the reality of sex-selective abortions is becoming impossible to deny.

Once the Live Action video was uploaded on to YouTube a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood quickly issued a statement. The nub of vice president for education Leslie Kantor’s response was that “a former staff member serving in an entry-level position did not follow our protocol for providing information and guidance when presented with a highly unusual patient scenario.”

Three things jump out at you about the Live Action video (the complete video and transcript of which can be found at and PPFA’s explanation.

First, the remarks of the PPFA staff member shown in the video bear out what Kantor alluded to in her response to The Huffington Post’s Laura Bassett. Bassett wrote that a

“spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Federation of America also told The Huffington Post that the organization condemns seeking abortions on the basis of gender, but its policy is to provide ‘high quality, confidential, nonjudgmental care to all who come into’ its health centers. That means that no Planned Parenthood clinic will deny a woman an abortion based on her reasons for wanting one, except in those states that explicitly prohibit sex-selective abortions (Arizona, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Illinois).” [emphasis added]

NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson commented, “The gist of Planned Parenthood’s response to the Huffington Post is that sex-selection abortion will be on their clinic menu in every jurisdiction that does not ban it by law — and yesterday, Planned Parenthood e-mailed U.S. House members a warning that the organization is strongly opposed to the bill to ban sex-selection abortions nationwide.”

Which is why, perhaps, much of the remainder of Bassett’s story is about how laws banning sex-selective abortions are a “non-solution,” according to Miriam Yeung, executive director of the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum. The real “solution” is getting to the “root” cause of son preference.

Second, Lila Rose, the president of Life Action, explained on her website that this new video “is first in a new series titled ‘Gendercide: Sex-Selection in America,’ exposing the practice of sex-selective abortion in the United States and how Planned Parenthood and the rest of the abortion industry facilitate the selective elimination of baby girls in the womb.”

“This was a multi-state, national investigation demonstrating that this is a widespread problem across our country,” Rose told The Daily Caller in a Monday interview. “First of all, the statistics and studies indicate that we are adding to the growing problem across the world of sex-selective targeting of unborn girls for abortion. We are going to be demonstrating — starting with this video from Texas — that the abortion industry in the United States is aiding and abetting this horrific problem.”

And third, this is not the first time Live Action has gone undercover to investigate what actually takes place in abortion clinics. Besides attributing misbehavior to a single employee (whom they canned), it’s noteworthy that Leslie Kantor added that “all staff members at this [Texas] affiliate were immediately scheduled for retraining in managing unusual patient encounters.”

That response looks like a carbon copy of what happened last year. As CNN noted its report of the most recent video controversy,

“Last year, after the anti-abortion group released another undercover video that Live Action said showed staff willing to assist sex trafficking and exploitation of minors and young women, Planned Parenthood announced it would retrain more than 11,000 staff members at more than 800 centers across the United States. The secretly recorded video used a couple portraying themselves as a pimp and a prostitute who were seeking abortions for underage girls.”

Only one employee—“a staff worker in the New Jersey office”—was fired.
