Two months after winning his last state in the GOP presidential sweepstakes, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich ended his campaign today in a speech delivered in Arlington, Virginia. Gingrich said he would work to elect Republicans at all levels this fall.
Describing his campaign as a “truly wild ride,” Gingrich chose to offer a contrast between presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama rather than formally endorse Romney.
“As to the presidency, I’m asked sometimes, is Mitt Romney conservative enough, and my answer is simple: Compared to Barack Obama? You know, this is not a choice between Mitt Romney and Ronald Reagan,” Gingrich said. “This is a choice between Mitt Romney and the most radical, leftist president in American history.”
The only Republican who has not withdrawn (candidates ‘suspend’ their campaigns so as to be able to raise funds to retire debts incurred during the campaigns) is Rep. Ron Paul (Tx.)
Gingrich endured a rollercoller experience. His most recent high point came after winning in South Carolina. The following week Romney won convincingly in Florida, and Gingrich was never again a major threat, winning only in his former home state of Georgia.
National Right to Life has enthusiastically endorsed Mitt Romney for President. “On pro-life issues, Mitt Romney and Barack Obama provide a stark contrast,” said NRLC President Carol Tobias at a National Press Club press conference. “As the country’s most pro-abortion president, Barack Obama has pursued a radical pro-abortion agenda. It is now time for pro-life Americans to unite behind Mitt Romney. For the sake of unborn children, the disabled, and the elderly, we must win.”
Gov. Romney thanked NRLC in a message he sent after learning of the endorsement:
“The National Right to Life Committee has been on the front lines of the fight to protect the unborn and uphold the sanctity of life. I appreciate their leadership and the tireless commitment of their nationwide grassroots pro-life effort. I am grateful for their support and honored by the trust they have placed in me. And I look forward to working together to carry out the great responsibility of defending and protecting innocent human life.”
