Largest Rally Ever for Canada’s March for Life

Canada’s 15th annual March for Life drew the latest crowd ever to Ottawa, illustrating that pro-lifers in Canada are not discouraged by Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s insistence he will not “reopen” the abortion debate. Best estimates are the march and rally drew nearly 20,000 people to the nation’s capital.

Canada’s march is in remembrance of the “Omnibus Bill” which struck down Canada’s ban on abortion. Canada is the only developed nation in the world without some abortion law.

“Science and medicine are teaching us more about the distinct personhood of the child in the womb,” said Bruce Clemenger, president of the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada. “You have heard it said that the debate over the protection of the unborn is over. I say look at this crowd.”

Or, as Alissa Golob, youth coordinator for Campaign Life Coalition, said at a news conference, “Whether you like it or not, the abortion debate is on.”

The immediate backdrop  is what took place April 26. Conservative Member of Parliament Stephen Woodworth brought forward a motion in the House of Commons to simply ask for a committee to discuss when an unborn child becomes a human being.

Woodworth’s motion 312, was to ask “that a special committee of the House to be appointed and directed to review section 223(1) of our Criminal Code which states that a child becomes a human being only at the moment of complete birth…”  His motion was opposed by even his own party leadership.

Undeterred pro-life members of Parliament attended the March, including Kevin Sorenson from Alberta.

“I want to thank my daughter’s birthmother for giving me the opportunity to raise Kristen,” Sorenson told the crowd, speaking of his now adult child. “It’s an honor to stand for life and if you think that I’m making a vocal stand, you should meet my daughter.”

And yesterday’s rally and preceding press conferences demonstrated that the Canadian pro-life movement is alive and well and determined to bring attention to abuses that are widely condemned including sex-selective abortions and forced abortions in China.
