Mitt Romney

Of all the positive news coming from recent polls, in the long term the most significant for pro-life Mitt Romney may have come from Gallup on Thursday. Although he has been on the receiving end of a barrage of criticism from an Obama-supporting media, Gov. Romney’s favorability ratings among the American people have risen to 50%.

As recent as February Romney’s favorability rating was at 39%. The explanation is intriguing.

Even though Romney is now the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Democrats do not view him more unfavorably. They have stayed the same.

But among Republicans, Romney has jumped from 65% who viewed him favorably in February to 87% now. Likewise among Independents, his numbers have climbed 11 points. “Independents now view Romney more positively (48%) than negatively (43%),” Gallup’s Jeffrey M. Jones reported Thursday.

Romney’s favorability number almost matches President Obama’s: 50% for Romney, 52% for Obama. (Obama’s numbers are lower in other polls.)

Another important way of gauging how much matters have improved–Romney’s unfavorable rating is lower than Obama’s: 41% for Romney as compared to 46% for Obama!
