What’s airing on Pro-Life Perspective? “British Health Secretary Under Attack for Clinic Inspections”

Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley

National Right to Life President and Pro-Life Perspective Host Carol Tobias begins the week with a look overseas—to England—to provide listeners with a helpful overview of the pro-abortion assault on Andrew Lansley, the British health secretary. His crime? To order unannounced inspections of more than 300 abortion clinics in England last month.

Understand, Lansley is no pro-lifer. But he became the object of a systematic campaign because he refused to turn a blind eye to the outrageous behavior of the abortion industry.

As Mrs. Tobias highlights, there are very, very few requirement of abortionists in the United Kingdom– “abortionists do not have to see a woman seeking an abortion in person, but they must certify that they are aware of her circumstances and why she wants to go ahead with the abortion.

But they ignored even those! She tells us

“an undercover investigation by the London Telegraph newspaper  revealed that doctors at many British abortion clinics were routinely falsifying their paperwork. Health Secretary Andrew Lansley was outraged and vowed to crack down on clinics which were operating outside the law.

As is its wont, the British Pregnancy Advisory Service and Marie Stopes—the cutting edge of the abortion industry—cried foul: Abortion was becoming “politicized.” An interesting charge, given that a critical letter from the chair of the Care Quality Commission, was leaked the press. (The clinic investigations were conducted by the CQC.) That letter—essentially saying that the time spent on investigating abortion clinics could have a “considerable impact on our capacity to deliver our annual targets”–was used by a pro-abortion Member of Parliament to charge  that there was a political “witch hunt” afoot.

This was, of course, sheer nonsense. Mrs. Tobias quotes from two stories about the controversy. The BBC reported, “Sources close to Lansley said that the health secretary had been ’happy’ to give the regulator extra resources to do the task if needed, ‘but they did not ask for them at any point. They never raised this impact with him when he discussed it with their chair at the time.’” In addition, according to the BBC “…in a statement, a Department of Health spokesman said the programme of inspections had been agreed with the regulator and it was up to the CQC to ‘prioritise its inspections … so that no patients were placed at risk.’”

Is it a coincidence that this alleged “witch hunt” just happened to take place a few weeks after another newspaper investigation that found that some abortionists were routinely approving illegal sex-selective abortions? What’s the adage? The best defense is a good offens.

As she ends today’s broadcast, Mrs. Tobias reminds us that the abortion industry – be it here in the United States, or elsewhere in the world–

“is only concerned with one thing: their financial bottom line, regardless of the law and the risk to women’s lives. Pro-abortionists have forced a belief upon society that abortion is somehow different from other surgical procedures and that women need not be told all of the facts or afforded safeguards that surround every other surgery performed. It’s a belief that led to Kermit Gosnell’s “house of horrors” in Philadelphia. And it’s a belief that puts the lives of thousands of women at risk every single day here and abroad.

She asks us to consider what’s the bottom line? “It’s not pro-lifers waging a ‘war on women,’” she says. “It’s the abortion industry.”
