What’s airing on Pro-Life Perspective Today? “Conquering Bias, Including Our Own”

While not saying that this accounts for all media bias, National Right to Life President and Pro-Life Perspective Host Carol Tobias asks us to think about what role post-abortion syndrome may play in explaining why pro-lifers typically are covered the way we are in the media. Mrs. Tobias lays the groundwork for that thought experiment by asking how we might respond if we’ve just met a woman who is an accomplished professional in her field and very pro-abortion in her politics.

“Our first impulse, perhaps, would be less than charitable,” Mrs. Tobias says. “But what if we discovered she was post-abortive? Would we not suspect that her pro-abortion position is, in least in part, a way of ‘managing’ her post-abortion experience? Wouldn’t our first thought be that her position on abortion reflects her desire to defend her own abortion years earlier?”

This could hold true if this woman was a reporter or an editor or a news anchor. There have been more than 54 million abortions. There is a man involved in all of these life-and-death decisions, as well as parents who may have pushed the woman into having an abortion.

Mrs. Tobias spends most of her time today at talking about how pro-lifers interact with the media and how NRLC always has workshops at its national convention to equip grassroots pro-lifers to create a more productive relationship with reporters and media outlets. (For more about the convention, please go to

You can listen to her suggestions, which run the gamut from “getting to know reporters and developing a rapport” to writing letters to news anchors commending them when they do a good job on a story.  Mrs. Tobias adds,

“Sometimes local television will cover news of an adoption in your area or of a heroic doctor who saved the life of a premature baby.  There are dozens of stories that are reported on the news every year that celebrate the joys and triumphs and sanctity of human life.  These stories don’t have to be directly related to abortion.”

Her conclusion at nicely captures what we must do:

“The Golden Rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you, breaks down barriers of all kinds. Give the world a chance to learn about what it means to be pro-life. Change the caricatures they may carry around in their heads by showing them examples of the caring human beings that you are. It’ll make a real difference.”
