A Cascade of Bad News for President Obama

Jun 14, 2012

By Dave Andrusko

“Is it time for Democrats to panic?

“That’s what a growing number of party loyalists are wondering, amid a rough couple of weeks in which President Obama and his political operation have been buffeted by bad economic news, their own gaffes and signs that the presumed Republican nominee is gaining strength.”
  —  Washington Post’s Karen Tumulty

“At some point, it’s hard to spin your way out of a trash heap.””
  —
Drew Westen, quoted in POLITICO. Westen is “an Emory University clinical psychologist who studies the role of messaging and emotion in politics.”

Pro-abortion President Barack Obama

When it rains, it pours…and thunders…and the sky lights up. Which is another way of saying, this has been a ten days perhaps unlike any other pro-abortion Barack Obama has weathered in his presidency.

The cascade of bad news did not begin with the pro-abortion failure last week to recall pro-life Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, but that seems in retrospect like the first movement of snow that signaled an impending avalanche. To name just a few (and there really are many more developments that could be mentioned):

  •          Polling results in states Obama either already had put in the “won” column or was ahead in have changed direction. The latest examples, from Rasmussen Reports, are Michigan (46% to 45%, Romney ahead), Wisconsin (47% Romney, 44% Obama) and Iowa (47%-46%, Romney).  Even Obama’s margin in Pennsylvania is down to just 6 points. Put a slightly different way, the National Journal’s Josh Kraushaar says that “three must-win ‘blue-wall’” states–Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—“are looking increasingly winnable for the Romney campaign.”
  •          A series of cloaked criticisms delivered to reporters by “Democratic strategists” and public naysaying challenging the Obama re-election team’s competence and ability to respond to what is clearly a rapidly changing environment. And that is besides comments from people like former Democratic President Bill Clinton who gently critiqued Obama’s all-out attack on pro-life Mitt Romney’s business background.
  •          A stunning report from a Democratic polling firm Public Policy Polling that suggests President Obama’s support has lessened, even among African-Americans. A summary of the PPP research among African-American voters in North Carolina is that

“The poll finds that Mitt Romney would get 20 percent of the African-American vote if the election were held today, compared with 76 percent for Obama. Overall, Romney has a 48 percent to 46 percent lead on Obama in the crucial swing state.

“Obama received 95 percent of the support from African-Americans in North Carolina in the 2008 election, compared with just 5 percent for Republican nominee John McCain.”

The next big sign to look for? When/if Democratic candidates begin to distance themselves from the President for fear they will pulled down by the undertow of electoral opposition.

Editor’s note. There is still time to register for the National Right to Life convention June 28 -30 and to reserve a hotel room at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in  Arlington, Virginia. Just go to www.nrlconvention.org.
