New Poll Shows Romney taking the lead in Michigan

Jun 7, 2012

By Dave Andrusko

The first question that came to mind after pro-life Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker comfortable beat back a recall effort Tuesday was what, if any, did that say about the presidential contest between pro-abortion President Barack Obama and pro-life Mitt Romney? Supposedly, Obama was still up by 7 points in a head-to-head matchup. But in fact, not only was that margin likely overstated, all the trend lines for the President are in the wrong direction. Wisconsin is in play.

Then, just two days later, a poll by EPIC-MRA of Lansing, Michigan, found that the state—supposedly safely in the Obama column—now preferred Romney,  46% to 45%! Just last month Democratic pollster Public Policy Polling had Obama up in Michigan by 14%– 53% to 39%.

National Journal’s Josh Kraushaar tweeted that the new numbers are  “Consistent with couple GOP internals I’ve heard about.”

Two other important considerations from the poll, released Thursday to the Detroit Free Press and four television stations.

First, the 600 likely voters (surveyed between June 2-5) found that “Obama’s personal and job approval numbers also have slipped, with 46% of Michiganders saying they have a favorable opinion of the president, and 41% approving of the job he’s doing,” according to Dawson Bell of the Free Press.

Second, the results are consistent with another negative  trend for Obama. “Perhaps most troubling for the Democratic president is a decline in support from independent voters, [EPIC co-founder John] Cavanagh said,” Bell reported.
