Obama Recycles old excuses in CBS News interviews

Jul 16, 2012

President and Mrs. Obama, interviewed by Charlie Rose

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me, say, 400 times, shame on me. If anyone is silly enough to accept President Obama’s “confession” to CBS News that his biggest mistake in his first term was his inability “to tell a story to the American people,” then they have only themselves to blame. Why?

For starters, Mr. Obama rolls that excuse out with a regularity that puts an assembly line to shame. Here’s what he said this time:

“When I think about what we’ve done well and what we haven’t done well, the mistake of my first term — couple of years — was thinking that this job was just about getting the policy right. And that’s important. But the nature of this office is also to tell a story to the American people that gives them a sense of unity and purpose and optimism, especially during tough times.”

How insulting, how misleading, and how repetitious.

What’s his underlying point? That his policy choices were right as rain but in these tough economic times Obama forgot to (figuratively) gather the American people at his feet while he told them a story that “gives them a sense of unity and purpose and optimism.”

But he could tell us this story in front of a warm fire, distributing hot chocolate and marshmallows, and that wouldn’t make ObamaCare anything less than an incomprehensible mess replete with multiple provisions authorizing federal subsidies for abortion insurance, multiple provisions allowing abortion-expansive federal mandates, and multiple provisions that will place unacceptable limits on the right of vulnerable Americans to use their own money, if they choose, to obtain both health care and health insurance less likely to deny needed health care.

What “story” could he tell us that would change the reasons NARAL loves him—such as repealing the Mexico City Policy, upping funding for UNFPA which adores China’s repulsive “One-Child Policy,” trying to gut conscience protections, etc., etc., etc.

But in some ways that isn’t nearly as off-putting as what he told Charlie Rose—the part about what’s frustrated him most—which is

“not the hard work. It’s not the, you know, enormity of the decisions. It’s not the pace. It is that I haven’t been able to change the atmosphere here in Washington to reflect the decency and common sense of ordinary people – Democrats, Republicans, and independents – who I think just want to see their leadership solve problems. And, you know, there’s enough blame to go around for that.”

Holy, moly has the man of a thousand vacations watched any of his own campaign’s toxic ads which accuse Romney of everything but kidnapping the Lindbergh baby? Has the President not read any of the many stories (which could have been many times more, had most of the press not been in his hip pocket) that talk about his arrogance/haughtiness/snootiness towards Republicans, especially when Democrats controlled both Houses of Congress and the White House?

The irony is, of course, that in 2009, with the control of ALL levers, that WAS the time when the President could have been magnanimous and reached out. He didn’t then, he hasn’t since.

I’ll pick this up a sidebar on this amazing story in “The Politics of Obama’s Audacious Cynicism.”
