Hawa Gabbidon

“She was pregnant at the moment so somebody took two lives,” Poinde said.
     — Tamba Poinde, brother of 17-year-old Hawa Gabbidon, who was found murdered Tuesday morning.

These stories appear in newspapers and on television stations with tragic regularity. Miss Gabbidon was found Tuesday morning in a park in northern Charlotte, NC by a passerby. She had been shot in the head. She was two months pregnant.

According to her father, Miss Gabbidon “had a boyfriend and she and the boyfriend were arguing about having an abortion.” Isaac Parchue told WBTV that he didn’t know who the boyfriend is, adding, “”We are pleading to the community for the community to help us as a family to bring Hawa’s killer to justice.”

As of Thursday, police had not announced any arrests but did issue a news release. In it, they said additional charges were possible because of the autopsy results. The assumption in the news accounts was that this is a reference to House Bill 215.

In May 2011  House Bill 215–titled the Unborn Victims of Violence Act /Ethen’s Law–passed and went into effect December 1. HB 215 makes it a separate crime to kill or harm an unborn child as a result of a violent attack on the child’s mother. Passage capped a battle that Republicans in North Carolina have waged for more than two decades to pass a unborn victims of violence act.

The bill is named after the unborn child of Jenna Nielsen, the mother of two, who was murdered in 2007 when she was 8 1/2 months pregnant with her third child.

According to the Charlotte Observer

“Mecklenburg prosecutors first used the new law earlier this year after the murder of Danielle Watson, the pregnant manager of the Flying Biscuit Cafe in south Charlotte whose body was found near the restaurant. Mark Anthony Cox was charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Watson and her unborn baby.”
