Pro-life Candidates Thompson and Mack Win Senate Primaries in Wisconsin and Florida

Aug 15, 2012

Tommy Thompson

In a race that featured four pro-lifers, former Governor Tommy Thompson pulled out a narrow victory yesterday in the Wisconsin Senate Republican primary. Mr. Thompson carried 34% of the vote compared to 30.9% for businessman Eric Hovde.  Former Rep. Mark Neumann came in third with 22.8%  while former state Senator Jeff Fitzgerald garnered 12.3%.

Thompson will face pro-abortion Rep. Tammy Baldwin in November.  The seat is open due to pro-abortion Democratic Senator Herb Kohl’s retirement. The race is considered a tossup by Cook Political Report.

“Governor Thompson’s commitment to the protection of human life has always been evident during his distinguished career in public service,” said Susan Armacost, Wisconsin Right to Life PAC director. “As a member of the Wisconsin State Legislature and as Governor, he consistently supported and signed into law numerous proposals that have been responsible for saving countless lives in Wisconsin. Wisconsin has one of the lowest abortion rates in the country and Governor Thompson’s actions on behalf of life contributed to this wonderful outcome.”

Armacost said that Rep. Baldwin has maintained “an ardently pro-abortion voting record throughout her years in the Wisconsin State Legislature and in the U.S. House.”

Pro-Life Rep. Connie Mack (R-Fl.)

In a four-way race in Florida, pro-life Rep. Connie Mack won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate with 58.7% of the vote. Mack was  followed by pro-life former Rep. Dave Weldon who garnered 20.1% of the vote, former Army Col. Mike McCallister, who position on abortion is unknown, with 13.9%, while pro-life writer Marielena Stuart received 7.3%.

Mack will challenge pro-abortion Senator Bill Nelson (D). Nelson’s longstanding pro-abortion record includes votes against landmark pro-life legislation such as the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act.

Senator Nelson also voted in favor of ObamaCare, which will provide government funding for health plans that pay for abortion on demand, and will promote the rationing of lifesaving treatments.  In addition throughout his career, Nelson has consistently voted to use taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions.

By contrast, Rep.  Mack voted against Obama’s pro-abortion, pro-rationing health care law and consistently voted against using government funds to pay for abortion.  Mack co-sponsored the D.C. Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 3803), a bill to end the current policy in which abortion is legal for any reason through all nine months of pregnancy in  the nation’s capital.

The Florida Senate race is considered “lean Democrat” by Cook Political Report.

In Florida’s third congressional district, pro-life champion Rep. Cliff Stearns lost to pro-life veterinarian Ted Yoho by 800 votes in the Republican primary.  Yoho and pro-abortion businessman J.R. Gaillot (D) will vie for the open seat in November.

And because of redistricting, pro-life Rep. John Mica and pro-life Rep. Sandy Adams landed in the same central Florida district, one of a number of member-against-member primaries. With 90% of the precincts tallied, Mica had prevailed in the 3rd congressional district’s Republican primary, 61% to 39%.

Pro-abortion candidate Jason Kendall (D) will challenge Rep. Mica in November.

In Minnesota’s Senate race, pro-life state Rep. Kurt Bills (R) won the opportunity to challenge pro-abortion Senator Amy Klobuchar (D) in the general election.

On August 21, Wyoming will determine its nominees for the November 6, general election, and Georgia will hold their runoff elections.
