By Carol Tobias, NRLC President & Pro-Life Perspective Host
All this week, we’re sharing with you pro-life Kansas Governor Sam Brownback’s stirring address at the closing banquet of the 42ndannual National Right to Life Convention. On Tuesday we discussed how Gov. Brownback talked about the courage and the determination of the British abolitionist leader, William Wilberforce. Equating the movement to end slavery with the Pro-Life Movement, Gov. Brownback noted that our Movement needs to recognize the historical importance of what we are doing today. And more importantly, we need to realize that we’re winning.
From there, Governor Brownback went on to talk about the pro-life tilt of the country, NRLC’s strategic role, and how science has established that the unborn is a child:
“America has now tipped over to a pro-life country, and the Gallup polls the last several years have continued to increase in its percentage of people pro-life – and the younger the demographic, the more pro-life the demographic. And so that to me is a very encouraging sign because you don’t change America until you change hearts and minds. Well, for now the Movement —for the many years it’s been going on has basically through its work, through its very strategic legislative agenda, and that’s why I’ve talked about the National Right to Life being the Gold Standard, it’s always very strategic, very tactical, how do we move the ball forward, how do we keep moving things forward. And then the public [is] getting more aware. When you look at the science on this, you’re just going, ‘This is a child.’ And now the American public is convinced – the majority of the American public is convinced—[the unborn] is a child. And now we can start accelerating as the public has agreed to that.
“But I want to issue another challenge to you that the place you change America isn’t in Washington then, it’s in the states. … It will be at the state level, different states doing this, making very positive key changes, ‘til you can migrate [those changes] federally. And also to where a court case can get up to the Supreme Court and Roe v. Wade be overturned – which will ultimately happen. But we’ve got to keep pushing! And pushing at the state level for things to happen so that we just constantly keep moving that forward.
“Now at the national level – and here I’m going to go completely political on you, as if you hadn’t maybe guessed that earlier. But we have a little presidential race in front of us. There was a little thing the Supreme Court did this week on ObamaCare. I don’t know if you’ve heard about it. If you haven’t, the Supreme Court upheld ObamaCare, and there’s one way of turning back ObamaCare, and it’s this fall and it’s in November and it’s who you vote for for President and who you work for for President.
“There’s a guy in this race who wants to implement ObamaCare and there’s a guy in this race that doesn’t. And I’m with the guy who’s pro-life!”
We’ll continue tomorrow with more of Gov. Sam Brownback’s address at the closing banquet at our annual National Right to Life Convention. In the meantime, we’ve provided links to purchase a CD or MP3 of this, and every other general session and workshop at NRLC 2012 at www. prolifeperspective.com.
