The gruesome story is from last week, but I just learned that Jeffrey Reynolds, 31, was arrested last Tuesday and stands “accused of slashing his wife’s throat and cutting their unborn child out of her abdomen with a kitchen knife,” according to multiple media outlets. “Paula Reynolds, 28, was seven and a half months pregnant,” WWLTV.com reported.

The last report I could find said Mrs. Reynolds was in critical but stable condition. “Deputies found the baby dead inside the home with a large laceration to the head.” Authorities have been unable to establish a motive for this horrific act which took place in Livingston Parish, Louisiana.

District Attorney Scott Perrilloux said Reynolds made a “chilling” 911 call to report the domestic disturbance. “The victim could be heard screaming in the background,” Perrilloux said,  according to The Advocate newspaper in Baton Rouge. Louisiana.

“It’s just a shock to the heart, to the soul,” neighbor Deborah Oubre  told WWLTV.com. “It’s painful to think about, it really is. To think that that poor woman went through that and that little baby doesn’t have a chance now and he took that. That’s something that never can be replaced.”

Others expressed their shock and horror as well. “It’s still fresh in everybody’s mind,” neighbor Ana McDonald told WWLTV.com. “It’s still fresh in my mind. I have a child. I can’t imagine that happening.”

A neighbor told ABC affiliate WBRZ that Reynolds was acting “incoherent” when deputies hauled him away. “He was howling like an animal,” Julie Collins said. “It was a stream of consciousness rambling and ranting and raving and what have you.” Authorities are awaiting the release of Reynolds’  toxicology report.

Reynolds is being held on $500,000 bond. The couple has another child—a six-year-old boy—who was not home at the time of the tragedy.
