Nine jurors chosen in abortionist Gosnell’s trial

GosnellandclinicAs the last post for the day on this snowy Wednesday, here’s a brief update on jury selection in the trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell, charged with eight counts of murder.

As of around 4:00, nine jurors had been selected– five women and four men. A total of twelve jurors and six alternates are needed. Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Jeffrey P. Minehart estimates that the trial of the 72-year-old Gosnell will last 6-8 weeks. Opening arguments are scheduled for March 14.

Naturally attracting far less attention is Gosnell’s co-defendant, Eileen O’Neill. An unlicensed doctor who worked for Gosnell, she is not charged with murder but with participating in what prosecutors call a “corrupt organization.”

Gosnell is charged with seven counts of first degree murder in the deaths of late-term babies aborted alive and then allegedly killed when their necks were surgically snipped. He also stands accused of third degree murder in the death of Karnamaya Mongar, who died after “repeated injections of strong narcotics, administered in accordance with Gosnell’s standard procedures,” according to a Grand Jury report. (To read an excerpt from the Grand Jury report about her death, go to “Karnamaya Mongar died because Gosnell’s unlicensed employees excessively drugged her.”)

Theoretically, Gosnell could receive the death penalty if convicted of first-degree murder. According to the Associated Press, “Potential jurors are being asked their views on abortion and the death penalty in a Philadelphia murder case that promises to be painfully graphic for almost anyone chosen.”
