A two-day old baby boy, wrapped in a plastic bags with his umbilical cord still attached, miraculously survived 40 hours after having been dumped in a drain under an apartment courtyard just outside of Madrid.

The baby was discovered at 2:00 am Sunday when a neighbor heard persistent cries that he mistook for the meowing of a cat and called firefighters. Instead they discovered a baby, who weighed 4 pounds, six ounces, at the point “where the building’s drains converged into a 1 square meter (1.2 square yard) manhole in a courtyard,” the Associated Press reported.

The baby’s 26-year-old mother has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to murder her newborn son, according to the AP. The woman had been admitted to Alicante’s General Hospital on June 21 “where she told medical staff she had suffered a miscarriage,” the AP reported. “When police arrived at the hospital to question her, the mother acknowledged to officers that she had tried to get rid of the baby but had not had enough money to pay for an abortion.

The baby suffered a fracture to a bone in one arm and other injuries yet to be detailed. He is said to be in a serious but not life-threatening condition in hospital.

One neighbor told the Daily Mail newspaper, “I thought it was a cat that was trapped and the baby’s crying was the meowing. The noise went on for ages so I called the police.” The Daily Mail added, “‘One of the firefighters saw one of his tiny feet and realised it wasn’t a cat but a child.”

According to press reports, there was a hole in the bag to allow the baby to breathe.
