Pro-Life Work, the Right to Life Movement, and the importance of staying single-issue

NRLlogo“We come together from all parts of our land – we who are known as the right to life people. We come rich and poor, proud and plain, religious and agnostic, politically committed and independent. We can agree only on our respect for life and our determination to defend the right to life.” These great words came from a founder and former president of National Right to Life, Dr. Mildred Jefferson.

National Right to Life, its fifty state affiliates and more than 3,000 chapters nationwide are single-issue organizations. This is one of the reasons we have been as effective as we have because we are able to speak together and spread a single message from California to Maine.

The Right to Life is the only organization that stands and exists solely for the unborn children and opposition to euthanasia. We are it. There is no other organization out there waiting in the wings to take our place.

There are groups who are fighting on the marriage issue; the death penalty issue; poverty, the homeless and all of the issues we are faced with as a society. But Right to Life is IT for the babies. There are some very important reasons for this.

To take on another issue will reduce our numbers. People join National Right to Life and our state affiliates and chapters because they believe, as we believe, that abortion and euthanasia are wrong and they want to work to end it.

That may be the only thing we agree on as Dr. Jefferson noted. We come from different religions, different backgrounds and often have absolutely nothing else in common – except for our desire to work to restore legal protection for all innocent human life.

If we take on other issues, some would disagree with the added issues and would be forced to leave the group. People who donate to your organization could feel the same way and decide they do not want their donations watered down.

The Right to Life is the First and Foremost of all human rights. It affects all other issues and without it, a person cannot get an opportunity to exercise any other right. Without Life all other rights and issues are meaningless.

Professor (later Judge) John Noonan, Professor of Law, University of California, Berkley, once wrote, “Once or twice in a century an issue arises…so far-reaching in its consequences, and so deep in its foundations, that it calls every person to take a stand.” Abortion, like slavery, is one of those issues.

Single issues have shaped the history of America and without them we may never have won our independence. They make a difference by allowing like minded people on that one issue to take a stand, together, and speak their mind.

If you are not already a member of National Right to Life and your NRLC State Affiliate and your local NRLC Chapter, now is the time to join! Now is the time to stand tall and firm and make a difference in the abortion battle. If you need information, please email  We look forward to hearing from you!
