RIchooselifeplateRhode Islander Gov. Lincoln Chafee has vetoed a bill that allowed license plates to be produced that say “Choose Life.” Twenty nine states have such specialty plates which often feature a child’s image.

Chaffee, a Democrat, cited “separation of church and state” in his veto message.

Half of each plate’s $40 issuance cost would have gone toward CareNet Pregnancy Center of Rhode Island, a Christian organization that offers free pregnancy testing, post-abortion counseling and information about alternatives to abortion.

Barth Bracy, executive director of Right to Life of Rhode Island, told NRL News Today

“The Choose Life License Plate was approved by an overwhelmingly Democratic Rhode Island General Assembly to support the positive choices of infant adoption and the Rhode Island Safe Haven program. The Choose Life Plate is already available in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Governor Chafee’s veto reveals an extremism on abortion that is consistent with his position on the national board of NARAL but is grossly out-of-step with other New England Democrats.”

Bracy concluded,

“ A man who speaks of tolerance while stifling the free speech of those who disagree with him can only be regarded as a hypocrite.”
