Between squinting at my computer screen (I’ve managed to break my reading glasses) and being slowed to a crawl by a particularly malevolent computer gremlin, it was a challenge to write this, the last post of 2013.

I mention that only because until a few minutes ago I was worried I would not be able to say a proper “thank you!”—or at least not get my feelings out via the Internet–to the readers of National Right to Life News Today.

I’m thankful, of course, not just to the readers of NRL News Today but to all whose faithful service and financial contributions make the work of National Right to Life possible. We work shoulder to shoulder, accomplishing together what otherwise would be impossible.

With that truism in mind let me just say…

If not for you, fainter hearts would have given up when President Obama was re-elected. That was a horrible day on so many levels for unborn babies and the medically dependent elderly. But when I recently spoke in Illinois I saw in person what I had known through the soaring determination evidenced in your correspondence: pro-lifers do not know the meaning of the word “quit.”

If not for you, all our efforts to craft and then pass legislation such as the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (already on the books in 10 states) would have been for naught. And as Mary Spaulding Balch always reminds us of a foundational truth: pro-life laws save lives.

If not for you, the number of abortions, ghastly as they still are, would be much worse. Never forget that in 1990, 1.6 million unborn babies were aborted. As best we can tell, the number of lost lives appears to have dropped to just over 1.1 million. That is a source of encouragement for us, but also a reason for the Abortion Industry to redouble its campaign to bring abortion to “underserved” areas, largely in rural areas.

If not for you, there would not be an endless stream of laments from pro-abortionists, bemoaning that every time they turn around pro-lifers are finding creative ways to help women in crisis pregnancies choose life. It is no accident that they hate women-helping centers with an almost irrational fervor.

And if not for you, our collective souls would have been coarsened to the point where it made no difference to us that we are taking the lives of the next generation and in so doing breaking the single most important bond in human culture. Your steadfast faithfulness is a constant reminder that without love and empathy and compassion for the powerless, we are lost.

Thank you for all you are doing for the little ones. I anticipate with joy and excitement working together in 2014.
