A sad, sad note to end the week with. Our Movement lost a knowledgeable, passionate, and tireless advocate with the passing this week of Mary Reilly Hunt.

Mrs. Hunt was involved in the Pro-Life Movement going back to the 1970s. I first met her when I arrived at National Right to Life in 1981 and was instantly impressed by her integrity and levelheadedness.

Mary was on the NRLC board of directors representing the state of Indiana from June of 1973 until June of 1981. From 1976 until 1980 she served National Right to Life Committee as acting Executive Director. She was Director of Development from 1979 until 1997, a very crucial time in NRLC’s organizational growth.

In 1994, Mary had the inspired idea to have the National Right to Life Educational Trust Fund host the first “Proudly Pro-Life Awards Dinner.” At that time, Mary was given the title of Vice-President for Development. She ran the Proudly Pro-Life Awards Dinner through 1996.

Mary is survived by four children: Marianne Schram, Philip Hunt, Robert Hunt and Elise Hannah; eight grandchildren: Kathleen, Marc, Marie, John, Douglas, Robert, Katherine and Alex; and three great-grandchildren: Christopher, Andrew and Halle

Mary’s ideas and innovations played a major role in the formation and direction NRLC would take. Her dedication, determination, and innovations were exemplary of the pioneer days and years of NRLC and the pro-life movement.

Family and friends may leave e-mail condolences at

May she rest in peace.
