Trent Kelly
On June 2, National Right to Life-endorsed District Attorney Trent Kelly (R), a colonel in the National Guard, soundly won the special runoff election to replace the late Rep. Alan Nunnelee (R).
The runoff was necessary after no candidate received 50% of the vote in the May 12 special general election. Under that scenario, Mississippi law requires a runoff between the top-two candidates.
One Democrat and twelve Republicans originally vied for the seat. Walter Zinn (D) garnered 17% and Kelly 16% to advance to the runoff.
Congressman-elect Kelly defeated Zinn with 70% of the vote.
