Happy Birthday, Georgia Life Alliance!

Jul 2, 2015

GLA2It’s been an amazing year for Georgia Life Alliance. Conceived in 2013, NRLC’s newest affiliate was born March 2014 through the love and labor of life-loving individuals who brought their gifts and passion for life together. Their growth this year has, in many ways resembled the first year of a baby’s life. They’ve taken baby steps toward many things and we wanted to thank you for your part in that! We’ve been so encouraged by their growth and the warm welcome they received from the very beginning, so we wanted to share some of the highlights of their first year.

2014

March – National Right to Life Committee’s Board of Directors voted to affiliate Georgia Life Alliance. Executive Director, Emily Matson presented GLA to the NRLC Board of Directors Meeting, seeking affiliation to partner with NRLC and join efforts to promote life issues in Georgia together.

April – To continue the process of building the organization, GLA brought on Kristina Twitty, who began to contribute over 20 years of nonprofit and political experience to organizing, communicating and building new relationships while strengthening those established over two decades ago. Read more about Kristina and the GLA Board of Directors HERE.

May – During the Primary Election, GLA reached out to Contested Primary Candidates with a simple Georgia questionnaire and posted results on their website as a guide for Primary voters.

June – Susan Lataif, NRLC Board Member was accompanied to the June Board of Directors’ meeting and Convention by Kristina Twitty. Following the Convention, Executive Director and Board Member Emily Matson, and Board Member Jim Froehlich joined in for a 1-day affiliate training.

Sept-November – Sept-November – GLA partnered with NRLC to distribute over 72,000 US Senate Voter guides, working with over 75 churches and individuals across the state.

2015

GLA1Sanctity of Human Life Sunday
GLA offered bulletin inserts for churches to distribute to their members on the January anniversary of the Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion on demand. Their approach was one that focused on prayer and also action, encouraging giving and serving agencies like pregnancy resource centers. Nearly 3500 inserts were distributed through churches and pregnancy centers. For more about this story and to see the flyer click here. January “Voice for the Voiceless” Luncheon
GLA’s very first public event, was hosted on January 21st, the eve of the 42nd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade at the State Capitol. Approximately 50 people, including 20 members of the State House and Senate, came together for encouragement in a common mission to affirm the value of all life in Georgia. Pro-life advocates from like-minded organizations, and several executive directors of pregnancy centers from across the state were in attendance and recognized as well.   For the rest of the story click here.

Life at the Capitol
In January, Emily Matson and Kristina Twitty both became registered lobbyists for the legislature, state agencies and local government. As the Georgia 40-Day Session began, they set about building relationships with legislators and providing copies of laws affecting the unborn compiled in one document. On Day 27, Representative Joyce Chandler (Grayson) introduced House Bill 555 which would accomplish two major objectives. First, HB 555 would help ensure Georgia’s women receive the information required by the Woman’s Right to Know Act (WRTK). Second, HB 555 would help ensure we have an accurate report of the number of females, age 10-17, who have obtained an abortion without their parents being notified. With 19 original co-sponsors, efforts were focused on educating legislators of the reasons behind this legislation and the importance of its enactment. Work will continue in the 2016 session to further this effort. Click here for the first Life at the Capitol Alert, and to sign up for GLA’s legislative updates.
