Pro-choice author finds “4 frightening takeaways” from new CNN poll

CNNlogo8On Monday we posted a story, the significance of which probably cannot be overstated but which, alas, may not have received the attention it deserves. We headlined our story on the latest CNN/ORC poll, “CNN poll finds that 58% believes abortion should be illegal in most circumstances.”

In a moment we’ll discuss how at least one pro-abortionist responded (hint: with near-panic). In a nutshell what the the poll of 1,012 adults conducted September 4-8 found was that

Overall, 39% of adults in the new poll think abortion should be legal in most circumstances, 58% that it should be illegal in most.

CNN found that 18% said abortion should be illegal. Then it separated out those who believe abortion should be legal in “a few cases” [40%] versus those who said abortion should be legal in “most cases” [13%].

Putting together those who said abortion should be illegal with those who said legal in a few cases, CNN found that 58% believe abortion “should be illegal in most” circumstances.

The headline for pro-choice author Robin Marty’s take is “4 Frightening Takeaways From CNN’s New Abortion Poll.”  She catches “frightening takeaways” that I had missed or under-emphasized.

emailbuttonreInterestingly Marty begins by downplaying what the poll found about abortion attitudes, focusing on how “About 71% say it’s more important for Congress to approve a budget agreement that would avoid a government shutdown than to defund Planned Parenthood, 22% say it’s a bigger priority to eliminate the organization’s federal funding.”

But then, she writes, “While that’s some good news for Planned Parenthood, some of the other news in the poll is a bit more alarming for those who support the right to terminate a pregnancy.”

So, what are the “four takeaways”? We will focus on number 4 (The wording, obviously, is Marty’s) :

1) Nearly one in five Americans think abortion should be illegal in all circumstances. [18%]

2) The number of people who believe a pregnant person should still give birth even if her life is in jeopardy is increasing. [From 9% in 2012 to 12% today]

3) Less people are supporting rape and incest exceptions, too.

4) Millennials are the most likely to think abortion should always be illegal.

Here’s Marty’s conclusion on that:

When you break down the age groups for who believes abortions should be illegal in all circumstances, the biggest group in favor of that stance is the 18-34 age group. According to polling breakdown, 23 percent of all 18- to 34-year-olds think abortion should always be illegal, twice as high as those in the 35 to 49 age bracket and even higher than those over 65. That could be a troublesome trend as those voters age and begin running for office, creating a new generation of politicians opposing all abortions and voters ready to support them in their campaigns.

Two quick thoughts. First, that number among millennials can vary a few points. Sometimes it is lower.

But, second, even so, even our benighted opposition grudgingly concedes the younger generation is much more pro-life than its predecessors. Given everything that is new–everything that has lifted the veil and made the unborn’s common humanity abundantly obvious–how could there not be a shift in the direction of life?
