Sun rises in East and PPFA endorses Hillary Clinton

Occasionally–but only very occasionally–someone will gently suggest I exaggerate the arm-in-arm relationship between pro-abortion presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of abortion in our solar system.

But, get this, from Amy Chozick, writing for the New York Times, of all places. The context is PPFA’s first-ever-in-a-presidential-primary endorsement of the former Secretary of State:

The Clinton campaign has functioned almost as a marketing arm for Planned Parenthood, featuring a section on its official website titled “17 times Hillary Clinton stood with Planned Parenthood,” Facebook messages and Instagram posts with the hashtag #StandwithPP. (Ms. Richards’ daughter works on the campaign’s staff in Iowa.)

To be fair to Chozick, besides emphasizing how much money PPFA’s political arm will spend this year, she does mention in passing that an endorsement from PPFA is not necessarily an unmixed blessing:

The endorsement does not come without risks for Mrs. Clinton. Planned Parenthood is a polarizing topic and the group suffered damaging public relations setbacks this summer when anti-abortion rights activists released video of an official from the group discussing the price of providing fetal parts. Mrs. Clinton promptly called the video part of a “concerted attack” against “a woman’s right to choose.”

Well, yes and no, and more is needed.

Where is the “yes” in Chozick’s paragraph? PPFA is a “polarizing topic.” Elsewhere she writes, “Planned Parenthood become an ideological minefield in the 2016 presidential election.”

Where is she wrong? Mrs. Clinton did not “promptly called the video part of a ‘concerted attack’ against “a woman’s right to choose.”

During a sit-down interview in late July with the New Hampshire Union Leader newspaper, Clinton said, “I have seen pictures from them and obviously find them disturbing.” Only later did she hue to the PPFA line, throw caution (and accuracy) to the wind and start talking about how this was just “the Republicans trying to inflame their base against Planned Parenthood.”

And more is needed than a passing reference to “the price of providing fetal parts.”

To be sure, dickering over the price of intact hearts and lungs and brains and kidneys is sickening enough. But PPFA’s public image took a gigantic hit for many other reasons, such as the following from Dr. Deborah Nucatola, senior director for medical services for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Talking about “crushing,” she told the undercover investigator for the Center for Medical Progress

“you try to intentionally go above and below the thorax, so that, you know, we’ve been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that, so I’m not gonna crush that part, I’m gonna basically crush below, I’m gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact”

“with the calvarium [the skull], in general, some people will actually try to change the presentation so that it’s not vertex [head first], because when it’s vertex presentation you never have enough dilation at the beginning of the case, unless you have real, huge amounts of dilation to deliver an intact calvarium.”

Of course, none of this matters to Mrs. Clinton. Not with all that cash– “at least $20 million to spend in this election cycle on presidential and Senate races in crucial battleground states, including New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin,” according to Chozick– and the following warm words echoing in her ears.

“Let’s be clear — reproductive rights and health are on the ballot in 2016,” said Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards. “We’re proud to endorse Hillary Clinton for President of the United States.

“No other candidate in our nation’s history has demonstrated such a strong commitment to women or such a clear record on behalf of women’s health and rights,” she added. “This is about so much more than Planned Parenthood. Health care for an entire generation is at stake.”
