Negotiations ongoing for new Irish government: Demand they Protect the 8th Amendment

Editor’s note. The following comes from Life Institute, a major Irish pro-life organization. As NRL News Today reported, Ireland had its general election on February 26th. To quote Patrick Buckley, “The Irish electorate dismissed the Fine Gael–Labour coalition.” A new government will soon be formed.

A major objective of pro-abortion forces is to “Repeal the Eighth,” a reference to the Eighth Amendment to the Irish Constitution which says, “The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.”

Fine Gael and Fianna Fail are political parties in the Republic of Ireland. “TDs” are members of the Dáil, the lower house of the Irish Parliament.

Your Fianna Fáil and Independent TDs need to hear from you, today.

This week, Fianna Fáil and Independent TDs will continue meet with Fine Gael to discuss forming a government.

Some TDs, like Mattie McGrath and Michael Healy-Rae have been outspoken in defending the 8th amendment. Bravo to those TDs for speaking out.

However, despite the pro-life results in the election, some in Fine Gael, like Leo Varadkar, are pushing hard to have a referendum to repeal the 8th amendment included in any Programme for Government.

This is an ideological battle for Varadkar and pro-abortion campaigners. There is no mandate for a referendum, and no public demand for one either, outside of the media demand manufactured to suit abortion advocates. In fact, as the Rallies for Life show, there are many more voters who see protecting the 8th amendment as a priority.

Fianna Fáil gained many pro-life votes when its candidates said they would oppose the repeal of the 8th. They need to hear from you TODAY.

1. Fianna Fáil needs to tell Fine Gael that a referendum to repeal the 8th amendment should NOT be part of any Programme for Government. They need to honour the commitments they made in the election.

2. There is no public demand for a referendum as evidenced by the election, where Labour who made repeal the 8th a key promise were wiped out.

3. In fact, the huge Rallies for Life – 30,000 people in Dublin last June, show that more voters are concerned with PROTECTING the 8th, than repealing it.
