“Life is precious and fragile”

lifeisprecious3reThis will be a brief post, because the entire “exchange” lasted perhaps 15 seconds. Yet I can’t get what I saw and heard out of my mind.

I had just left the parking garage this morning. About 50 feet ahead of me, a woman was smiling so broadly you thought her face might split. Then as if to celebrate, she twirled herself around, making a full circle.

Honest, I was not eavesdropping, but she spoke just loud enough so that I could not miss what she said: “I heard the baby’s heart.”

By that time I was about parallel with the woman and the older gentleman with whom she was sharing this good news on a street corner in downtown Washington, D.C.

The conversation doubtless had a preface and more was sure to come. I just heard one statement as I walked by.

He said, “Life is precious, and fragile.”

I don’t know why he said it, what background in his own life made him respond to this joyous news in the manner he did.

What could/should I add? Just this. That baby’s life is so very precious, as is every baby’s. If only every mother responded with uncompromising love.

To those who don’t, that’s why you and I are here: to help them, to strengthen them, to let them know we care about them and her babies.
