Number of abortions continue to decline in Alabama, which annoys pro-abortion reporter

Alabama5dismembermentabortionsreI’m guessing it was just an excuse to bash the state for passing two new pro-life laws, but the Huntsville Times today carried a story today about “Abortions down in Alabama: Tough laws close clinics, cut numbers.”

First, the good news in reporter Amy Yurkanin’s story, courtesy of the Alabama Department of Public Health.

In the state and across the nation, the number of abortions is going down. Doctors at clinics in Alabama performed 10,280 abortions in 2010 and just 8,080 in 2014, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.

The rate of abortion is lower in Alabama than the nation. In 2011, 12 percent of Alabama pregnancies ended in abortion, compared to 18 percent nationwide, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

Why do I say these numbers were just a “hook” so that Yurkanin could bash the legislators? The numbers came out last December! Not exactly breaking news.

That fact, and the lead in Yurkanin’s story:

The number of abortion clinics in Alabama has dwindled from 12 in 2001 to five in 2016, and two of those clinics may have to close if the courts uphold laws recently passed by the state legislature.

The number of clinics isn’t the only thing on the decline. So is their business. The number of abortions has dropped steadily in Alabama and across the nation since 1990, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Good news, right? Not to Yurkanin:

But the decline in the number of abortions hasn’t stopped lawmakers from proposing new restrictions.

(By the way, this “reporter” editorializes most explicitly when she observes, “I think that the legislators do it for political reasons and to campaign about.”)

The laws she is alluding to are (1) SB 205, which prohibits the issuing or renewals of a health center license to facilities where abortions are performed within 2,000 feet of K-8 public schools; and (2) The Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act which bans the practice of crushing, tearing and pulverizing a living unborn human beings who then bleeds to death.

So, in Yurkanin’s world, it is outrageous (and “done for political reasons”) to keep the Planned Parenthoods of this world a few blocks away from the little children it missed and to bar a grotesquely violent end to a living human being.

Tell me again who is the “extremist”?
