What great news, especially coming in the context of the upcoming March for Life, House approval of the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” a presidential memorandum restoring the “Mexico City” policy, and the announcement today by pro-life President Donald Trump that he will name his nominee to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court next week.

As of last Tuesday, West Virginia has only one abortion clinic. Kanawha Surgicenter closed its Charleston office, leaving just the Women’s Health Center of West Virginia, also located in Charleston, to abort babies in the Mountain State.

“Kanawha Surgicenter closed as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to a note posted on the door of the clinic in Charleston’s Kanawha City,” wrote Lori Kersey for the Charleston Gazette-Mail. “A woman who answered Dr. Gorli Harish’s phone and said she is his wife, said the family moved to California two years ago to be closer to their children and grandchildren. The doctor had been commuting to Charleston once a month to perform procedures and no longer wished to make the regular trips, she said.”

Kersey reported that last Friday, “A dumpster outside the clinic was piled high with boxes and bags of medical supplies from the facility. Furniture sat outside the dumpster. A man was going through the refuse, pulling syringes from a bag.” However the woman who said she was Harish’s wife, told Kersey that medical records had been shredded and “were not among the waste from the clinic.”

Both the local number and the 800-number for Kanawha Surgicenter have been disconnected.

But Wendy Holdren, who writes for the Register-Herald Reporter, reported, “According to the West Virginia Board of Medicine, Harish’s license is active and remains valid through June 2018.”

“A study released this month by the Guttmacher Institute found that in 2014, there were five states with only one abortion clinic,” according to Anna Swartz. “ Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
