George Soros
In prior posts we’ve discussed the massive investments pro-abortion billionaire George Soros’s Open Society Foundation has made to overturn protective abortion laws around the world.
For example last August, the Independent reported
A foundation headed up by George Soros, one of the world’s richest people, is providing financial backing to organisations seeking to repeal the constitutional prohibition of abortion.
A leaked strategy document details how Soros’s Open Society Foundation planned to fund Amnesty International Ireland, the Abortion Rights Campaign and the Irish Family Planning Association.
The move was said to be part of a strategy to force the repeal of the Eighth Amendment, potentially setting off a chain reaction in other strongly Catholic countries in Europe.
The three organisations confirmed to the Irish Independent they had received grants from the foundation.
Well a story in today’s Irish Central newspaper reported that following a warning from the Republic’s Standards in Public Office (SIPO), The Abortion Rights Campaign returned $25,000 from Soros’ Open Society Foundation.
Irish law prohibits foreign sources from donating the equivalent of roughly $100 or more “for domestic political purposes.”
The ARC admitted nothing (“The grant was received to fund educational and stigma-busting projects,” it insisted) but “in good faith we returned the grant in order to comply with all regulatory frameworks.”
According to the newspaper, a SIPO spokesperson said it could not comment on individual cases. But a SIPO statement said that under the Electoral Acts, “A donation means any contribution given for political purposes” and that “A third party is prohibited under the Electoral Acts from accepting a foreign donation.”
SIPO further defined a foreign donation as
“a donation, of whatever value, from an individual other than an Irish citizen who resides outside the island of Ireland or from a body corporate or unincorporated body of persons which does not keep an office in the island of Ireland from which one or more of its principal activities is directed.”
