I had hoped the Chronicle TV newsmagazine show on doctor-prescribed suicide would be fair!
Instead, Chronicle was over the top. Dr. Barbara Rockett and John Kelly, representing the pro-life side, had at most two minutes between them. They did very well, but the rest of the show was pro-death propaganda with the doctors speaking, people from Compassion and Choices and Death Cafe speaking, legislators, Brittany Maynard’s husband, a lawyer, and a professor speaking.
And everyone knows the host is the most believable person on a show. He certainly made the most of that.
The pro-doctor-prescribed suicide people were shown on the beach, on the campus, at weddings, in the woods, with babies and pets. John and Barbara were shot in one interior location behind a microphone. I’ll bet you noticed many other clever touches.
The thing was masterful. And the final touch for us was Joe Fitzgerald’s column in the Boston Herald yesterday supporting doctor-prescribed suicide – no coincidence, for sure!
We have always known what we were up against. This was simply another very effective example of what they can pull off. It is up to us to respond. We don’t have the high-priced consultants and the heavily funded organizations. We have what is better and what won the ballot question in 2012 – we have ourselves.
