Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner
Illinois Federation for Right to Life, NRLC’s state affiliate, put it squarely in the headline accompanying a post on its webpage: “3,800 Innocent Lives a Year Depend on Governor Rauner.” The post reads
The eyes of Illinois and the entire country are on Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner this week.
Earlier this year, the Illinois legislature passed the controversial HB 40, ensuring that abortion remains legal in Illinois if Roe v. Wade is overturned. More importantly, HB 40 would also require taxpayer funding of abortion for low income women through Illinois’ Medicaid program.
In April, Rauner indicated that he would oppose the legislation because of “sharp divisions of opinion” about taxpayer-funding of abortion. However, word out of Springfield is that the Governor may be reconsidering his position. That said, Governor Rauner absolutely needs to keep his promise and veto HB 40 — most importantly because thousands of innocent lives depend on it.
“Protecting Roe v. Wade” is standard pro-abortion agit-prop. That is always rhetorical cover for expanding the “right” to abortion (expunging even the most minor limitations) and paying for more abortions. See New York state, for example.
Illinois already pays for abortion in cases of rape or when a mother’s life is in jeopardy. HB 40 would compel Illinois taxpayers to pay for abortions for Medicaid recipients (and state employees ) through all nine months of pregnancy.
Gov. Rauner, who is pro-abortion, has finessed his position both as a candidate and as governor. If he signs HB 40, however, he will have thrown in his lot with pro-abortion extremists.
