Pro-life President Trump to address March for Life

The minute I learned today that pro-life President Trump will address the annual March for Life this Friday via Satellite, I immediately thought of the first interview he gave as President, this to ABC’s David Muir, where he called Muir’s bluff on the size of the pro-abortion, anti-Trump “Women’s March.”

The interview aired Wednesday, January 26, four days after the march.

Muir says, “Let me just ask you while we’re standing outside, could you hear the voices from the Women’s March here in Washington.” To which President Trump calmly responded

“No, I couldn’t hear them. The crowds were large, but you will have a large crowd on Friday, too, which is mostly pro-life people.

You’re going to have a lot of people coming on Friday. And I will say this, and I didn’t realize this. But I was told. You will have a very large crowd of people. I don’t know as large or larger. Some people said it will be larger. Pro-life people and they say the press doesn’t cover them.

At the same time he was giving a shout-out to the March for Life, the President had turned the tables, parrying Muir’s clumsy attempt to embarrass Mr. Trump by countering with a deft, even subtle putdown of the media for neglecting the hundreds of thousands of people who assemble each year in our nation’s capital.

(By the way, the following day when I read the official ABC News transcript, I laughed out loud. This exchange was conspicuous by its absence. Hmmm. What a coincidence.)

According to LifeNews

President Trump will become the first president to speak to the March for Life via a live video feed. Presidents Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and George W Bush all addressed the March for Life as well with pro-life remarks. There remarks were typically pre-taped or they were aired via a live phone call to March for Life participants. With better technology available today, a live video stream is more easily accomplished.

Last year, Vice President Mike Pence and Presidential Counselor Kellyanne Conway spoke to the March, a time at which Pence famously said, “Life is winning again in America.” I remember thinking at the time, the press already hates Mr. Pence, a rock-ribbed, unapologetic pro-lifer. Now, they would hate him more—and so they have.

Let me close this post by expressing gratitude to President Trump, not only for speaking to the March, but for the pro-life measures he has already taken and by adding one more quote from Vice President Pence’s remarks:

“Life is winning through the steady advance of science that illuminates when life begins more and more every day. Life is winning through the generosity of millions of adopted families who open their hearts and homes to children in need. Life is winning through the compassion of caregivers and volunteers at crisis pregnancy centers and faith-based organization who minister to women in the cities and towns across this country. And life is winning through the quiet councils between mothers and daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters, between friends across kitchen tables and over coffee at college campuses. The truth is being told. Compassion is overcoming convenience and hope is defeating despair. In a word: life is winning in America because of all of you.”
