According to its webpage, “The National Catholic Prayer Breakfast began in 2004, ‘in response to St. John Paul II’s call for a new evangelization.’ The event is officially nonpartisan and people of all faiths are invited to attend.”

Whoever was able to attend this morning’s gathering in Washington, DC, was treated to vintage Archbishop Joseph Naumann, the incoming chair of the U.S. bishops’ pro-life committee. Never, ever let it be said that Archbishop Naumann, a very close personal friend of our Movement if ever there was one, does not speak his mind.

So please take a moment and sign up for the 2018 National Right to Life annual convention, June 28-30. Archbishop Naumann will be the Prayer Breakfast speaker on June 29.

For those who may not know, earlier this year the Catholic Bishops elected Archbishop Naumann as chairman of the conference’s vitally important committee on pro-life activities. He will succeed another pro-life champion, Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York. He takes over formally in November.

I am still searching for his prepared remarks. When I locate them, I revisit his speech. In the interim, many thanks to Claire Chretien, who wrote about Archbishop Naumann’s remarks.

According to Ms. Chretien, Archbishop Naumann “lamented efforts to force Catholic hospitals to commit abortions.”

She writes

When “materialism reigns and brings utilitarianism,” society no longer acknowledges unalienable rights, he said. “The pursuit of pleasure becomes the highest goal…in the end, [pleasures] leave us more and more empty” and “suffering and death” become enemies.

It’s this mindset that causes people to view the severely disabled as more “vegetable” than people, he said, even though caring for them is “the noblest form of love.” This mindset also views babies in the womb as “too tiny to have rights but something very useful to destroy” in hopes of restoring youth “to those already born.”

One other quick thought about the importance of National Right to Life’s Premier Annual event and what you can expect—in addition to Archbishop Naumann’s Prayer Breakfast remarks–when you attend.

The convention brings together in one place national experts on every phase of the life issues in order to equip grassroots pro-lifers not only with the knowledge and skills they need to advance our cause, but provide enthusiasm and motivation. You will come away rejuvenated!

Please do not delay. Go to for full details about the convention and then sign up at
